In a significant stride towards advancing innovation in the realm of Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT), Dubai Blockchain Center (DBC) and the Helsinki Blockchain Center have come together in a strategic partnership. This momentous agreement, solidified in recognition of the immense potential of blockchain technologies, paves the way for both centers to jointly foster innovation in their respective regions, Finland and the United Arab Emirates.

The collaboration sets the stage for an exciting journey of knowledge exchange, innovation, and mutual support, positioning both centers as catalysts for the thriving blockchain ecosystems in their regions. One of the primary goals is to empower startups by offering them a platform to achieve their aspirations and connect with like-minded individuals and fresh ideas within the blockchain domain.

This agreement opens the doors for a dynamic exchange of expertise, content production, and participation in each other’s events, including hackathons and various activities aimed at nurturing blockchain innovation.

In Finland, the spotlight for 2021 falls on virtual events. The Blockchain Summit Helsinki will take center stage, with three online editions planned, alongside smaller meetups organized by the Blockchain Forum’s Working Groups. These Working Groups encompass diverse areas, including Business Applications, Ethereum, Hyperledger, Law, and Research/Education/Standards.

In Dubai, the focal point of the year is the highly anticipated Future Blockchain Summit, slated for October 17–21, 2021. This event is among the largest blockchain gatherings in the Middle East. Furthermore, this year marks the debut of the Fintech Surge, an innovative exhibition and conference dedicated to financial technology.

Anita Kalergis, Ambassador to Dubai for the Helsinki Blockchain Center, expressed her delight at this collaboration, saying, “The UAE, especially Dubai, is at the forefront of this technology, so I am very happy to have Helsinki, my hometown, in such a collaboration agreement. With it, we can start to look into the future and do this important work together.”

Dr. Marwan Alzarouni, CEO of Dubai Blockchain Center, highlighted the agreement’s potential to facilitate the exchange of talent, innovations, and ideas between Scandinavia and Dubai. He emphasized the goal of cross-visibility for projects in both cities and the expansion of startup initiatives into new markets within Scandinavian countries.

Jamile Hamideh, Chairman of the Board of the Blockchain Forum Finland, emphasized the common vision shared by Helsinki and Dubai, with a focus on connectivity and technology’s transformative impact on people’s lives. He envisions the collaboration between the two centers as an opportunity to exchange experiences and innovative ideas, particularly regarding the digitalization processes essential for the development of smart cities.

The roots of this collaboration can be traced back to the Future Blockchain Summit held in Dubai in December 2020, where the two centers collaborated to showcase the work of Crypto Artist VESA during the event.

Markus Lehtonen, CEO of the Helsinki Blockchain Center, expressed confidence in this partnership as the first of many for Helsinki. He envisioned an ambitious future that includes collaboration with Dubai, Amsterdam, London, and New York, all working together to pioneer best practices in blockchain technology.
